[ - WC4AR - ] Request for assistance - Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge University - DATE CORRECTION

Calling all Hams,

                We have had a request for some assistance with the Merit
Badge University being held at Cumberland University on Saturday, MARCH  8,
2008 - NOT MAY 8 AS PREVIOUSLY STATED.  They are wanting to be able to offer
the Radio Merit Badge and are needing a couple of Hams to help out by
teaching the boys about Amateur radio.  Also, it would be nice if we could
get someone to set up a station and give the boys a live demonstration as
well.  This event will last from 8:00am until 3:30 pm.  All instructors will
need to meet at Baird Chapel at 8:00 am and the MBU will open at 8:30 am
with the classes starting at 9:00 am.  Lunch will be provided for all
instructors and assistants!  

                This would be a great opportunity to help educate today's
youth about the great hobby of Amateur Radio, the importance it pays during
major disasters, and the thrill of talking to someone hundreds or thousands
of miles away without the tools they are used to (internet, cell phones,
etc.)  This is also an opportunity to expose approximately 800 people to the
hobby in a single day simply by being there, setting up a field station, and
making contacts.  I have attached a list of requirements for the Radio Merit
Badge that would need to be covered in the class.  If you would be willing
to help with this event, please e-mail me or Greg Tomerlin
(k4k0 at charter.net) and let us know if you can do the classroom portion, the
demonstration station, or could help with both.  If you are willing to set
up a field station at MBU, please detail any power requirements you will
have so that we can make proper arrangements for you.  Please take this
opportunity to help our youth and future leaders by imparting to them some
of your knowledge, experience, and fun moments from Amateur Radio and open
their minds and ears to the possibilities found only in Amateur Radio.
