Hi,
I'm trying to help a friend, Dr. Tim Farris, who is a professor of
physics at Volunteer State Community College.
Vol State is hosting the Regional Competition Qualifying Event for
high school students in the Science Olympiad. This is an academic
competition for high school science students. This particular event
is a qualifier for state and then national competition.

Tim is seeking a volunteer (an event coordinator by title) to help
supervise one exercise in the Science Olympiad. The time commitment
is this Saturday, March 3rd from 9:30AM - 11:45 AM. The event for
which one volunteer is needed actually takes place from 10:00 - 10:50 AM.

The exercise is part lab (hands on) & part written. The students will
be asked to:
measure voltage & current, asked to calculate equivalent resistance
interpret resistor color code (possibly)
using simple RC circuits, measure voltage as a function of time
(using a DMM & stop watch), derive RC time constant
calculate RC constant based on values of R & C, compare to
measurements, calculate % difference

Volunteer Event Coordinator will need to have basic knowledge of
electric circuits, answer questions pertaining to proper use of
digital multi meter, possibly need to troubleshoot student's
connections of basic R & C components, gather response sheets from
students and hand them to the event coordinators.

go to Pickel gymnasium at Vol. State Community College
ask for Lisa Davis, Nancy Morris, or Chuck Hicks

If you are available this Saturday morning for a couple of hours and
would like to help some science oriented high school students in this
competition, please contact:

        Wilson ARC Meeting - 3 March 2007

This Saturday at 6:00 PM in

        Labry Hall - Room 122.

NOTE: THIS IS NOT OUR NORMAL ROOM
            ===========================

The meeting will be held in room 122
of Labry Hall. This classroom is on
the main floor of Labry Hall and is
the last room on the right.

Labry Hall is east of the softball
field along McClain Avenue and due
south of Memorial Hall (the clock
tower). It sits just to the west of
        the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center
which is visible from the cafeteria
        patio.

The parking lot where we normally
park will likely be full Saturday
evening, but there should be ample
parking in the large parking lot
        behind Memorial Hall, accessible
from South Tarver Avenue via the
drive just south of the baseball
field. There might also be parking
by Labry Hall accessible from McClain
        Avenue.

See this web page for a map.

   http://www.wilsonarc.org/htmls/map_CU_campus.htm

Labry Hall is building 3 on this map.

Don't miss this meeting. It should be
        interesting.

Hi folks,
I have received the new crystals (two sets) for the repeater. I tuned
up the exciter tonight, only to find that the crystals are 3kc high
in fundamental frequency...both of them. This places the repeater
~36kc high in Tx frequency...which of course is completely
unacceptable. I'll contact ICM (the crystal manufacturer) in the
morning to see what should be done.
I expect a delivery of wire that I need to interface the controller
any day now. Perhaps tomorrow night I can test the receiver;
hopefully the new Rx crystals won't be off frequency.
I understand there were several questions concerning the repeater at
the last meeting. I'm sorry this is taking so long, but please trust
me I'm working on it every chance I get. I want it back on the air as
much as you, plus I want it off my work bench..

Thanks,

Can you fwd this e-mail on to members of Wilson ARC. Thank you

Some of the local hams here in the mid-south have
expressed an interest in starting a CW training net.
The net will be held on sunday afternoons at 2:00 PM
local time on 7.110. At this time we are calling
this net the " Midsouth Training Net " . I will be
acting as net control in the begining which will be
something new for me. Larry, AB6LY, has also volunteer
to help out and may be net control when I can not make
the net plus I think we maybe able to get Richard,
KI4EMJ, to help out as ncs. I want to encourge anyone
interested in improving their CW skills and learning
about the operation of a cw net to take part in this
net. I want everyone to understand that anyone is
welcome to take part in this net reguardless of their
CW speed or experience. We will work stations at the
speed they check in ( unless that is too fast for me HI ).
This is meant to be a learning experience but also fun.
I am trying to get things ready to have the first session
of this net on sunday April 1 but will keep everybody
posted as to when we will start this up. If everybody
intested in taking part in this net will e-mail me at
pkbsr70 at hotmail.com i will send them more infor on
this net and details on how to check in. i hope we can
get a good group to take part in this. Also everyone
should keep in mind that techs can now operate in the
novice HF sub bands so they can take part in this net
too.

Hi,
I've interfaced the repeater to the S-COM 7k controller. You may
recall that the last time the repeater was on the air it was stuck in
transmit, and was transmitting white noise. It also wouldn't respond
to DTMF commands.
It appears at this point the controller has issues; it isn't
generating a PTT signal, and it doesn't appear to be passing audio. I
have other controllers I can put into service in the mean time. As a
matter of fact, I have the club's spare controller which was purchase
some weeks ago.
I intend to implement the spare controller to so that I can continue
to configure and align the repeater, and hopefully put it on the air
soon. As you're aware, this is Easter weekend, plus my work schedule
is very busy right now, so your patience is appreciated while I
continue the job.

I have a friend who is moving and wants to sell 50' of Rohn 25G. The
tower is standing currently, and has a house bracket keeping it
erect. It is in good condition, and includes stainless steel bolts.
If you or someone you know would be interested, please contact me.
The time line to have the tower gone is within the next two weeks. It
is located near Percy Priest Lake in Davidson County. Assistance with
removal of the tower would be appreciated. There may also be some
antennas available; not sure about those yet.

Hi Folks,
Progress continues on the 147.105 repeater.
I've successfully connected the RC-100 controller which was purchased
for the back up repeater. It repeats!
The Motorola PL decode board is slow to decode, which is causing the
repeater to be slow to key up when a user transmits. I intend to
connect the CommSpec tone board this weekend to see if it will be
faster in decoding.
Once that is all sorted out, I can begin the final tune up of the
transmitter P.A., and re-assembly of the cabinet. Once that is
completed, we can put it on the air.
After that, I'll turn toward the back-up repeater and diagnosing the
7K controller.

Thank you,

Hi folks,
Progress continues on the 147.150 machine. I ran into a power supply
problem on the RC-100 controller (the back up controller) and it is
now repaired. I plan to finish the controller installation into it's
enclosure tonight. I've acquired an extender card necessary to adjust
the audio and squelch settings on the repeater, so I hope to work on
that tonight and tomorrow night as well.

IF all goes well, we could have the repeater back on the air in a few
days. There will be a period of testing and adjustment following that.
