Hello Wilson ARC members & friends,

Wow! This year is flying by. Thanksgiving is just two months away and
Christmas is 86 days from today. And we all know what that means.
It's time for another Wilson ARC meeting.

Next Saturday, 7 October 2006 at 6:00 PM, the Wilson Amateur Radio Club
will meet in the K Room of the Mitchell Student Center on the campus of
Cumberland University. Our very own Landon Roeder KC5ACP has the
program this month and will be discussing, among other things, RFI and
how NES works to eliminate the problem when it occurs. He will have
with him some of the equipment they use to help sniff out RFI and will
demonstrate some of the latest technology used in this area. Don't miss
this meeting.

The cafeteria will be open before the meeting, so if you plan to eat on
campus, get there by 5:15.

Message-ID: <6.2.3.4.2.20061025201504.037c1140 at mail.comcast.net>

Hi folks,
Practically all of you are aware the 147.105 repeater is off the air.
Some of you are aware I'm working on it.
As an update, I've corrected the initial problem of the Rx being off
frequency, and I've made several improvements in the audio level adjustments.
I was about to call it done last night when I discovered the P.A.
isn't making power as it should. This, I assume, happened while the
unit was in my possession; it almost has to be that way. Why it has
failed remains a mystery to me. While I've been working on the Rx
chain, and audio levels, I've had the P.A. disconnected from the
exciter and power supply as a safety against damaging the P.A.

Regardless, I do plan to replace the P.A. and get the repeater back
on the air soon; hopefully by the first part of next week. Please
bear with me in this, and I do appreciate the patience you've shown thus far.

Thank you,
Robin Midgett K4IDC

Hi folks,
As many of you are aware, the WC4AR repeater has suffered from
intermittent intermod problems since we put it back on the air. I
intend to visit the site today or tomorrow to see if I can determine
the origin of this problem. I understand from many that this has been
a problem at the site for many years. It may have something to do
with the fact we're in the same building with a UHF TV transmitter...
Regardless, please bear with me as we try to determine the root cause
of this problem.

Thanks,

Message-ID: <6.2.3.4.2.20061205172639.03662288 at m.mail.vanderbilt.edu>

During our visit to the repeater site yesterday, I was surprised to
find that the controller wouldn't respond to DTMF commands. Since the
intermod problem became really ugly last Saturday, I had turned the
repeater transmitter on and off remotely several times via DTMF
commands. Once on site, I wasn't able to get a response from the
controller. So, I hauled it home to work on it. I'll update you on my
progress as I make it.

Also, the intermod problem may be somewhat helped (maybe solved) by
requiring CTCSS, or PL tone. The equipment we're currently using
doesn't have that ability, so today I ordered a tone board for the
repeater. I will install it before returning the machine to the site.

On the subject of sites, if any of you have thoughts or options for a
different site for the 147.105/r, please let me know. I believe the
intermod problem which has plagued this repeater for years is related
to the high RF environment in which it is located. I did look at the
RF coming out of the duplexer into the Rx port of the repeater while
at the site yesterday. I did see a few short burps in the spectrum,
but not anything that resembled the wide-band, continuous noise we've
been hearing of late.

On a final note, we have the OK from Bill Jewel K4EHL to utilize the
146.73 repeater for our normal use while 147.105 is down. So, I'll
look forward to chatting with you on 146.73. The Thursday night WC4AR
Info Net will take place as scheduled, using the 146.730 machine.
