Front page of the Monday, 17 April 2006 edition of the Tennessean shows our
beloved Emergency Coordinator, Pete "the ink bandit" Navarra -K4IWX, in action
during the storms ten days ago. It's a good article, with several references to
amateur radio. Nice job Pete. Keep up the great work.

Here's the deal... the archive of email messages for this email reflector was
lost at some point in the last few months. Those archived messages are gone and
will not return. In addition, the archiving feature of this reflector no longer
works. Tech support from our web hosting company informs me that in order for
the email reflector to begin archiving its messages again, this reflector will
have to be completely deleted, then recreated. I can do it all from this end,
but it will take me an hour or so to accomplish. However, deleting and
recreating WC4AR at wilsonarc.org might generate email messages to each of you
stating that: 1) you have been unsubscribed, and then 2) you have subscribed to
the WC4AR at wilsonarc.org reflector. Also, your password will change, but of
course, you can change it back if you like.

Please forgive me for this inconvenience. I'm sure some of you are growing
tired of the problems encountered here and the changes to our two main email
lists, but hopefully this will get us back to where we belong.

If you send email to this list today, and it does not appear in your own inbox
within an hour or so, you'll probably need to resend it.

Thanks for your patience.

Ha! Hollywood... Hmm... =)

It is a good article. Touches on a lot of different stuff. Though, for
some reason, the article has a different tone then the title of the article.
Maybe it's just me.

Good props for amateur radio though.

Subject: [-WC4AR-] info regarding FEMA Independent Study for ARES volunteers
Message-ID: <4444E7D2.2090204 at charter.net>

GM all,

At the last Wilson ARC meeting, several of you grabbed
a CD containing study material for the FEMA Independent
Study courses. Since then, I have discovered that the
best way to study any of those courses is to use the
FREE Interactive Web-based Course provided by FEMA.

From what I have read, the Dept. of Homeland Security
will soon require (by 2007) all first responders,
including ARES volunteers, to complete training in
the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
Fortunately, FEMA offers a free, self-study course
and online exam for NIMS which, when passed, leads
to certification. The online course is entitled:
An Introduction to the National Incident Management
System (IS-700). The IS-700 Web-based course is
divided into seven sections which are said to take
approximately 15 to 30 minutes each. It took me
a little longer than that, but I completed the
entire course in about five hours total, spread
out over three days. Once you begin a section,
you must complete it, but you can get through
even the longest section in an hour or less.

It's possible that IS-100 (Introduction to the
Incident Command System) will also be required
of ARES volunteers, but that's not confirmed.
Nevertheless, I took IS-100 first and it made
the first half of IS-700 a breeze... almost a
review, so you might consider doing the same.

For a link to the Interactive Web-based courses,

From FOX news "Out There" 4/16/06:

DELAND, Fla. (AP) ? Talk about lost in the mail. A postcard sent from a
Stetson home to a man in Riverside, Calif., was returned this week with
a "return to sender" stamp ? and its 1956 postmark.

Mack McCormick, 59, did not send the postcard, but he lives in the home
where the postcard originated. It was delivered to his mailbox Monday.
"The card apparently has been in the twilight zone for 50 years,"
McCormick said. "It's not wrinkled or anything." He used the Internet to
track down the author of the note, George Hitz, 64, who now lives in
Sudbury, Mass.

"I had to keep asking questions and pull it out of Mack," Hitz said. "It
wasn't obvious to me that he lived in our house."
Hitz, a former *ham radio operator* included his age on the postcard and
information about a radio contact he made in February 1956 with someone
he called "Chief Operator Dave." No street address was included for
Dave, which may explain why the postcard was not delivered, postal
officials said.

It is unlikely the postcard spent the last 50 years in a DeLand post
office, said Joseph Breckenridge, U.S. Postal Service spokesman for
Central and North Florida. The local post office has not been in the
same location that long, and maintenance workers would have found it if
it was trapped in a sorting machine, Breckenridge said.

The card may have been sent to California and was rediscovered recently
by someone who dropped it back in the mail, Breckenridge said.

Hitz said he is not interested in getting his old postcard back.
McCormick plans to frame it.

Message-ID: <6.2.3.4.2.20060418140210.03172b08 at m.mail.vanderbilt.edu>

Hello everyone,
We will be taking the 147.105 repeater off the air tonight at
approximately 6:30 PM in order to repair the distorted audio problem.
I can not say at this time when it will be back on the air, but I
will have a better idea in a day or two, maybe less. It is my hope
that it will be back in proper condition before Monday...but that is
my hope, not a promise.
In the interim, we have been welcomed to use either or both the
146.64 or 146.73 machines in Wilson County for our needs. The weekly
Information/ARES net will be held on 146.64/r Thursday night at 7:00 PM.
I'll keep you posted on the progress of the repeater repair.

Thanks,

Good Afternoon All,

Just a quick note to everyone on the Wilson ARES mailing list regarding the
next few weeks. I will be out of pocket the next two weeks as I will be in
Dallas, Texas on personal business. I have left Greg K4KO, Robin K4IDC, and
Steve K4GF in charge of the group in the event that severe weather or other
ARES activations should need to be initiated.

I have given them both a copy of the NEW ARES roster. There are only 11
names on it. If you have not filled out a NEW Wilson County ARES
application, see the attached file and send it to Greg K4KO, our Member
Coordinator, if you are interested in being apart of the newly reorganized
Wilson County ARES.

Until then, have a great two weeks.

73,

Pete Navarra
Emergency Coordinator
Wilson County ARES
